eye closeupA blepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid restoration, is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids, or both. It results in a more rejuvenated, healthy, alert look in the area around your eyes.

There are many different issues that can be addressed through an eyelid restoration procedure. Excess fatty deposits and loose or sagging skin can be removed. Bags under the eyes as well as eyelid droopiness in general can both be addressed and corrected. It is important to be specific with your plastic surgeon regarding what you expect your results to look like. Your age, facial tissue and structure, and general health will all play a part in the successfulness of your eyelid restoration surgery.

The surgical procedure for an eyelid restoration is very simple. The incisions are designed to be in areas that will naturally hide scars. If you would like to address the upper eyelid region, an incision is made in the natural crease of your eyelid followed by repositioning of fat, tightening of tissue and muscles, and excess skin removal. To address problem areas of the lower eyelid, and incision is made on the inside of the eyelid itself to remove excessive fat while loose skin can be removed from an incision hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid if necessary. The incisions are closed with either removable sutures or surgical tape.

Prior to your surgery you will be given anesthesia to ease any discomfort. The type of procedure you choose to undergo will affect the length of time of the surgery, but it generally should not take longer than an hour. Afterward, it is possible that ointment and cold compresses will be applied, and even some loose gauze over your eyes. There may be swelling, bruising, irritation, or dryness, many of which can be treated with medication or ointment. It is important that you protect your eyes from sun exposure by wearing darkly tinted sunglasses until your eyes are fully healed.
