For those who want to avoid a surgical procedure, it is still possible to look fresh and rejuvenated. Botox, filler, or fat grafting are all options that restore a more youthful appearance without going under the knife.
Botox is a product used to prevent the development of wrinkles in the skin. It works by temporarily disabling the muscle movement wherever it is injected, which is most often near the eyes (“crow’s feet”) or forehead. Fillers such as Juvederm and Restlyane eliminate wrinkles by literally filling in the wrinkles to achieve skin that is smoother. Fat grafting involves liposuction to suck fat out of one area on your body and then injecting it into shallow or sunken areas of your face to achieve a younger look.
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss the different options you have and how each one will affect your body. Be direct with your surgeon about what results you expect, and your surgeon can tell you whether those results are realistic or not. Your surgeon will also examine the contours of your face as well as characteristics of your skin: texture, elasticity, smoothness, and any inconsistencies.
On the day of the procedure, you may be given a topical anesthetic beforehand to numb the skin. The amount of time the procedure takes will depend on which option you choose, but it should not be longer than an hour.
The recovery from any of these rejuvenation techniques is not a difficult one. There may be some swelling or bruising, but sitting in an upright position and applying ice packs should help reduce the swelling and bruising. Patients are able to return to work or other engagements usually within a week or so. It is necessary to avoid strenuous physical activity for approximately two weeks to allow yourself full time to heal.
